Student opportunities and events

I have received a number of opportunities from different sources that might interest students. Please take advantage of them if you can. In the past we have had students who ahve been lucky enough to win free places at conferences andf ound it an enormously rewarding experience. Great chance to network!
1. UKSG (UK Serials Group) Annual Conference 2008 and exhibition. Taking place in Torquay from 7-9 April. There are six free student places. The sponsorship award covers the cost of attendance at the conference, including meals, enteratinment and accomodation. All students are eligible, part-time and full-time etc. To be considered, students should write a letter of application including asummary of why they would like to attend. This letter should be countersigned by a tutor and sent to Graham Stone, Education Office c/o Hilltop, Heath End, Newby RG20 0AP. The deadline is Friday 8th February. In return for thesponsorship students are required to submit a critical appraisal of the conference. The best reports will be published in the Group's online journal.
2. UC&R Group West Midlands Section would like to invite you to a one day event at Aston University, Birmingham on Thursday 13th March 2008: A free place is available on a first-come, first-served basis for a student currently studying for a degree in library and information science, in return for writing a short report of the event for publication.IN, OUT, SHAKE IT ALL ABOUT: ETHICAL WEEDING AND DISPOSAL OF PRINTED LIBRARY RESOURCESIncreased demands on space within higher education and research libraries present formidable challenges for the management of print collections, bringing consideration of weeding and disposing of stock to the fore. This event will examine national and local institutional responses to such challenges, providing an opportunity to exchange and develop practice in this difficult ethical area.
